Fractional comms leadership for B2B tech

Your company just got more interesting. Your story hasn’t caught up.

I’m Charlotte Bass. I step in as senior comms lead for tech companies at the moments it’s needed most. A funding round. A first big launch. A founder who wants to build their profile. You get someone who has done this many times, on your side of the table, without the agency retainer or the six-month hire.

Before

We are a leading provider of innovative, AI-powered solutions that empower enterprises to unlock value.

After

[Your one sentence. The one a journalist repeats without being asked.]

People usually call me when one of these is true.

You’ve raised. The press want a story and you haven’t written it yet.

Your engineers are brilliant and nobody outside the building understands what they’ve built.

You’ve merged, pivoted or rebranded, and half your own team can’t explain the company any more.

You know you need a head of comms. You’re not sure you need one five days a week.

What I do

Six ways to work together. Most clients start with one and end up using two.

01

Fractional Head of Communications

A few days a month or a few days a week. I run comms as part of your leadership team. Strategy, media, spokespeople, managing any agency you already have. You get the senior judgement now and hire full time when it actually makes sense.

Retainer

02

First Story

For companies going external for the first time. We find the story, get your founders ready for a real interview and land the coverage that matters to your buyers and investors. It’s built on the frameworks I designed for start-ups doing exactly this.

Project or retainer

03

Narrative Reset

Something big changed. New money, an acquisition, a new market. The way you describe the business didn’t change with it. I rework the story inside and out, so your investors and your next hire hear the same company.

Project or retainer

04

Founder and Executive Voice

Thought leadership that sounds like a person wrote it. I help leaders work out what they actually think, then get it in front of the editors, podcasts and stages their customers pay attention to.

Retainer or standalone

05

Media and Crisis Training

Your spokespeople, ready for the interview that matters. We practise with the questions real journalists ask, the awkward ones too, until the answers sound like them and not a script. Crisis training means nobody is making it up on the day. I built the media and crisis programmes for Chubb and its parent company, APi Group.

Half-day or full-day sessions

06

Comms and Marketing, Joined Up

PR wins the coverage. Marketing chases the leads. Too often they never speak. I’ve run both, as Global Head of Marketing at QikServe and on integrated programmes at Chubb and in agencies. I make your coverage feed your content and your content feed the pipeline, so the board sees one story about what comms is worth.

About

Hi, I’m Charlotte.

I’ve spent nearly two decades in B2B comms. In-house at Chubb and QikServe. Agency side at Hotwire, Allison and TopLine. I’ve sat next to CEOs during company acquisitions and I’ve built strategic plans that lead to read results.

I’m good with technology people find hard to explain. AI infrastructure, data, fintech, the stuff that makes journalists’ eyes glaze over until someone finds the human bit. Finding the cut-through that nobody else can, that’s my super power.

Alex Karp argues that neurodivergence is a strategic advantage. I agree. The way my brain works means I’m calm in a crisis and driven to solve the most complex of challenges. I write about neurodiversity and work in my newsletter, Unbriefed Comms, and I’ve studied neuroinclusive leadership at Ulster University. If your team has people who think differently, I’ll know how I brief them, how I run a media day and how I build a plan they’ll enjoy following.

My leadership has been recognised in the comms industry; I’ve judged the PRCA Awards and been invites to speak at CIPR Annual Conference. My content has been published in tech, comms, marketing and national media, audio and broadcast.

How it starts

A proper conversation

Thirty minutes. No deck. You tell me what’s going on. If I’m not the right person, I’ll say so and point you to someone who is.

A fixed-price first month

I get under the skin of the business and we agree what good looks like in plain numbers. Then we get on with it. No lock-in beyond that.

Got a story that’s outgrown you?

Send me a line about what’s happening. I reply to everything, usually the same day.
